March 29, 2011 · by Paul Chaney

Google’s so-called “Farmer” algorithm update emphasizes original, unique content for favorable organic search results. Frequently-updated, keyword-optimized, topically-relevant blog posts can provide your ecommerce site with original content, and improve its search engine rankings. I have seen it happen with my own blogging efforts time and again. In fact, I believe blogging is its own form of search engine optimization. And while there is no way to guarantee better SEO results, here are some guidelines that will help.

Update Content Frequently

A question I am routinely asked about blogging is, “How often should I post?” The answer is, “As often as you can.” If you are planning to use a blog for marketing and search engine optimization purposes, the more frequently you can update content, the better. Google thrives on fresh content. I recommend a minimum of three to five times per week. And blog posts don’t have to be long — 350 words is a good average length.

Think Keywords

Frequency alone will not dramatically help improve search engine rankings. The use of keywords is vital as well. I am not talking about old tricks such as keyword stuffing – search engines are too sophisticated for that. Nor am I suggesting that keywords are all that matter. That is not the case.

The job of search engines is to provide the most relevant returns for a given search. One way they accomplish this task is by attempting to understand the value proposition of a site as a whole — how one page within a site relates to the other. The better they can do that, the better a site will rank. Keywords, used judiciously, are one way to assist the search engines in that process.

8 Suggestions for Relevant Keywords

Here are some suggestions for properly using keywords in a blog post:

One keyword per post. Decide on a list of keywords to use with your site, then choose one particular keyword for each post.

Use keyword early. Include the term in the title and early in the post, if possible. That is to say, use the keyword term early, rather than later.

Repeat keyword. Put the keyword in your opening sentence. Then, depending on the length of the post, use the term again in the body content.

Link the keyword to other content. When possible, hyperlink the term to relevant content. That could either be other posts within the site itself or on other sites.

Include in the URL. Put the keyword in the URL of your blog post. Blog platforms such as WordPress will use the blog post’s title in the URL, so that reinforces the need to get the keyword into the post title.

Include in H1 headers. Put your top few keywords into level 1 headers, known as H1 tags in HTML. Most blog platforms will automatically place the blog title inside an H1 tag. If that is not the case with your particular platform, it may be possible to edit the style sheet to correct the problem.

Use tags and categories. These are not only used for organizing content within a hierarchical — or taxonomic — structure, but are also keywords themselves. Or, at least they can be. When it comes to creating categories and tags, think keywords.

Don’t overdo it. If you have the keyword in the post URL, title and body copy a couple of times, that should be sufficient. Avoid keyword stuffing your posts, which could lead to SEO penalties from the search engines.

Get Links

Getting back-links is a long-term search engine optimization staple. That’s one of Google’s most important criteria in determining how it prioritizes search results. We’ve addressed legitimate link-building ideas here, most recently at “SEO: 5 Ecommerce Link-Building Ideas.” You can also search here for “links for additional articles on link building.

Bloggers tend to be natural linkers. Adding hyperlinks to blog posts goes back to blogging’s earliest days when posts were little more than lists of links.

Remember to syndicate blog post content to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. It’s not just a matter of “write it and they will come.” You have to get your content out to the places where people gather. These days, that means social networks.

Also, when you write something particularly newsworthy, put out a press release. In the past I have used services like PRWeb to get the word out about a post.

The Example of SingleServeCoffee.com

My favorite example of how well a blog that maintains solidarity in terms of its topical focus can rank in search returns is SingleServeCoffee.com. Everything from the name of the blog to the name of the blogger — Jay Brewer — has its focus on single serve coffee. Google the term and you will see what I mean. Brewer’s site has been the number one return for years.

If you find yourself straying from a single topic, then consider creating another blog (or blogs) to address the others. More than likely, over time you will refine your writing to topics on which you exhibit the greatest passion. Others will fall away by attrition.

Conclusion

The key to successful blogging is to write genuine, helpful, humanized posts, combined with the building of relationships with other bloggers, and with friends, fans and followers on social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. In the long run, that approach will pay more dividends where SEO is concerned than anything else I know.

The key takeaway here is, “blogging is its own form of search engine optimization.” I coach clients to think of blogging as “Here and Now Marketing”. When you use a blog post to comment or share expertise on a news item (Now) it helps readers as well as search engines to connect with your web presence (Here).

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dublin – Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/f5d432/what_to_know_befor) has announced the addition of the “What to Know Before Signing or Negotiating an SEO Agreement as a Communications Executive” audioconference to their offering.

What to Know Before Signing or Negotiating an SEO Agreement as a Communications Executive is a time-efficient way to get the most up to date information on the key terms to make sure are included (or not included) in an SEO Agreement and negotiation strategies to use with prospective SEO experts and companies. Take the 60 minutes to view this webinar (on your computer, mobile phone, iPad, Kindle or printed out) to make sure that you are aware of how to best negotiate the financial terms and legal issues associated with SEO and are prepared with the best tips and techniques from other communications executives before negotiating and signing an agreement on behalf of your company.

Take advantage of your next commute, flight, business trip, lunch, or free hour in your schedule to view this webinar.

The webinar is led by an expert on advising communications executives on SEO Agreements, Jim Pond, partner, getcompassed.com, and focuses on:

- Everything you need to know in 60 minutes before signing or negotiating an SEO Agreement in 2011

- A line-by-line look at an updated SEO Agreement, highlighting terms that are most negotiable right now, and specific wording examples of provisions that need to be included

- Specific negotiating strategies to use with prospective SEO experts, consultants and companies

- Perspective on how to measure the effectiveness of SEO and what you should specify they include in all reporting so that you can best analyze your ROI

- The 10 questions most asked by communications executives (and their CEO, CFO and CMO) with respect to SEO Agreements, how to hire the right SEO company or expert and negotiate the right contract in order to avoid potential pitfalls (such as getting your company banned from Google searches)

- Case studies of other communications executives that have had success negotiating SEO Agreements that are advantageous to their company, what worked best for them, and important lessons learned

Praise for ExecSense Webinars:

Dynamic, up-to-date resource… – Tina Ferguson, CEO of Rapid Success Partners

ExecSense webinars are convenient and on-pointan intelligent discussion on a very relevant subject. – Meghan Wulff, Focus Management Group

Part art and part science, search engine optimization is not for the faint of heart, what with its ever-changing rules and potential for spectacular disasters. The stories of JCPenney and DecorMyEyes, in particular, have recently provided a vivid illustration of how not to do it.

Yet SEO has become a necessary part of doing business on the Web–companies that don’t do at least some basic keyword optimization of their Web pages put themselves at a significant disadvantage relative to their competitors.

I’ve already looked at some clear “don’ts” in the area of SEO, including keyword stuffing and cloaking your content. I’ve also outlined some of the basic things any business should do. Now I’d like to highlight a free browser toolbar that was just updated and stands ready and waiting to lend a hand.

Webmaster Tools

SEO, of course, is the process of making small tweaks to your Web pages such that they are more likely to be ranked highly on Google and other search engines. Essentially, what that means is that when someone searches on keywords that are highly relevant to your business — “composting services,” say, if that’s what your company offers — your business will be among the top 10 listed by the search engine.

Or so you hope. It’s certainly possible to achieve that kind of success without any SEO, but a little optimization can go a long way in helping you get there–particularly given that your competitors are probably doing it too.

I’ve already noted webmaster tools that can help, such as SEOmoz’s Open Site Explorer — which is free for up to 1000 links with metrics — and Yahoo’s Site Explorer. It’s definitely a good idea to use some such tool to monitor your search traffic, rankings and backlinks. Another one, however, is the MozBar, a free SEO toolbar also from SEOmoz for both Firefox and Chrome.

Custom Search Profiles

The MozBar offers easy access to key SEO tools and data while you surf the Web. Users of the toolbar can see SEO metrics at a glance while they’re browsing, and an Analyze Page overlay exposes metrics and page elements.

A search engine results page (SERP) overlay, meanwhile, offers detailed link metrics for Google, Bing and Yahoo.

With the Firefox version of the software–which was just updated this week–users can also create and run custom search profiles by search engine, country and region or city. This can be particularly helpful if you have a chain of stores in three different cities, for example, or if you are keeping tabs on the search results for a particular term in several different countries.

You can even save up to 10 search engine profiles that you commonly use and quickly open and compare the results for each.

IP Location at a Glance

Other new features in the freshly updated Firefox version include enhanced keyword and link highlighting, making it easier for users to quickly see all of their company’s followed links, for example, or just the links that link to external sites.

Users of the new Firefox version can also now export their SERP results along with all of the high-level link data shown in the SERP overlay.

A new button, meanwhile, shows the country where the Web site currently being viewed is hosted; a click on that flag reveals more details about the location and IP address. Clicking on the IP address provides immediate access to WhoIs information.

A Chrome Update on the Way

A video demonstrating MozBar in action is available in Thursday’s announcement of the new Firefox release. A similar update will be released for the Chrome version of MozBar sometime in the coming months, SEOmoz says.

Compatible with Linux, Windows and Mac, the MozBar could be a useful tool to help your business stay on top of its SEO.

ADOTAS - SundaySky, which specializes in automated video production at scale for retailers, suggests in its latest research that many e-commerce outfits are ignoring a key SEO tactic. By optimizing branded videos on their websites, consumers can be sent directly from search results to product pages.

Testing 34,000 keywords garnered from Shopping.com’s top searches within 17 categories, 18% featured video results. In particular, about half of the keywords for video games generated video results.

Take a wild guess where most of these video results go – if you didn’t say YouTube, slap yourself. HSN has a whopping 79,034 videos on the site; the next biggest uploader is Systemax (3,625), followed by Buy.com (3,080) and QVC (1,243). Nike’s channel, which has 1,096 videos, is the most watched with nearly 150 million views, trailed by Systemax (84 million) and HSN (43 million).

SundaySky reports that 96,000 retail videos were posted on YouTube in the first quarter of 2011 (a 9% quarter over quarter improvement) while retail videos garnered 420 million views (13% QOQ increase).

SundaySky notes that not many online retailers use videos to drive search traffic to their sites, but those that do have all mass-scaled website inventory to thousands of product videos. Overstock has an estimated 95,000 videos on its site, followed by Amazon with 72,635 and HSN with 29,620. HSN has an estimated 12,500 videos indexed by search engines, while Overstock has 6,310 and Nike 4,070.

SundaySky’s advice? “Similar to standard SEO best practices, producing mass-scale videos to cater to long tail keywords will generate better search engine results, particularly in the more saturated categories.” Apparently 32% of retailers scaled to 1,000 or more videos on their sites, compared to 22% the year before.

Many off-site search engine optimisation (SEO) campaigns could be falling short of their full potential due to poor on-site structure and badly written copy, warns PR Company, Punch Communications.

Online PR News – 27-May-2011 –Many off-site search engine optimisation (SEO) campaigns could be falling short of their full potential due to poor on-site structure and badly written copy, warns PR Company, Punch Communications.

Businesses or SEO Agencies undertaking a campaign need to perform a comprehensive review of the website they are going to be promoting before they even entertain starting any off-site activity. Without this initial action, Google and other search engines won’t pick-up on the relativity of the website and page content against the chosen keywords.

On-site activity that needs to be taken into consideration includes ensuring urls are appropriate and search engine friendly, the keywords are suitably used within the copy, website descriptors are correct and, H1, H2 and alt tags are all fitting for the designated landing page.

Ben Leuty, account manager at Punch Communications, commented: “On-site and off-site search engine are two very different animals, almost individual campaigns in their own right, but one won’t work without the other. On-site SEO serves to increase the ease in which a search engine will read the website and decide upon how appropriate it is to the search. If the urls are complicated, the copy incorrect, and the likes of H1 and alt tags not appropriate to the matched keyword, search engines will glace at the site and more often than not, move on to scan the next site. As a result of this, any off-site SEO work will be severely hindered, if not rendered useless altogether.”

Off-site SEO campaigns are effectively link building exercises and increases a websites rankings based on the number of links facing back to a particular page against the relevant search term.

Ben continued: “Punch has a great deal of experience with both on and off-site SEO and currently successfully manages campaigns for almost three quarters of clients. We, ourselves are positioned number one for a number of terms including PR Agencies, PR company, digital PR and many more. A successful SEO campaign is a great means of lead generation and can literally change a business, so it’s well worth taking the time to ensure a website is optimised on-site before any off-site activity is under taken.”
