In “The Conscience of a Liberal”, Paul Krugman, today’s most widely read economist, studies the past eighty years of American history, from the reforms that tamed the harsh inequality of the Gilded Age to the unraveling of that achievement and the reemergence of immense economic and political inequality since the 1970s. Seeking to understand both what happened to middle-class America and what it will take to achieve a “new New Deal,” Krugman has created a work that weaves together a nuanced account of three generations of history with sharp political, social, and economic analysis.

Paul Krugman, who was named Columnist of the Year by Editor and Publisher magazine, writes a twice-weekly column for the op-ed page of the New York Times. He is a professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton University, and the author or editor of 20 books and more than 200 professional journal articles. In recognition of his work, he has received the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association, an award given every two years to the top economist under the age of 40. The Economist said he is “the most celebrated economist of his generation.”

This Authors@Google event took place December 14, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Mike Kim visits Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book “Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the Worlds Most Repressive Country.” This event took place on June 26, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.

The first of its kind, this book provides a rare and unique inside look into the hidden world of ordinary North Koreans. Mike Kim, who worked with refugees on the Chinese border for four years, recounts their experiences of enduring famine, sex-trafficking, and torture, as well as the inspirational stories of those who overcame tremendous adversity to escape the repressive regime of their homeland and make new lives. One of the few Americans granted entry into the secretive Hermit Kingdom, Kim came to know the isolated country and its people intimately. His North Korean friends entrusted their secrets to him as they revealed the governments brainwashing tactics and confessed their true thoughts about the repressive regime that so rigidly controls their lives. Civilians and soldiers alike spoke of what North Koreans think of Americans and war with America. Children remembered the suffering they endured through the famine. Women and girls recalled their horrific sex-trafficking experiences. Former political prisoners shared their memories of beatings, torture, and executions in the gulags. With the permission of these courageous individuals, Kim now shares their stories and recounts his dramatic experiences leading North Koreans to asylum through the 6,000-mile modern-day underground railway through Asia. His unflinching narrative exposes the truth about North Korea, stripping away the last veils that still shroud this brutal dictatorship.

Mike Kim is the author of Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the Worlds Most Repressive Country. Mike is a Korean-American who, in 2003, moved to the China-North Korea border and founded Crossing Borders, a nonprofit dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance to North Korean refugees. While living near the North Korean border, he operated undercover as a student of North Korean taekwondo, training under North Korean masters from Pyongyang. During his time in China, he learned of the hundreds of thousands of North Koreans fleeing to China through a 6,000-mile modern-day underground railroad in search of food and freedom. He has interviewed hundreds of North Koreans and in his book he recounts their experiences of famine, defection, sex-trafficking, and torture in gulags. Mike frequently appears in the media: He has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and has appeared on Larry Kane: Voice of Reason.

Ellen and Julia Lupton visit Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss their book “Design Your Life.” This event took place on June 17, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.

Ellen and Julia Lupton are identical twins. They are co-authors of the new book “Design Your Life: The Pleasures and Perils of Everyday Things” (St Martin’s Press, 2009). This illustrated talk will take a fresh, funny look at everything from housekeeping and entertaining to parenting and procrastination. Discover how design helps improve (and muddle) everyday situations, from pillows in the bedroom to computers in the kitchen. Find out why your bra doesn’t fit, why the living room refuses to disappear, how one-eyed Siamese bunnies are rebuilding civilization, and how roller luggage is threatening to destroy it. The Lupton twins live and work on the East and West Coasts, respectively; this talk will be their first opportunity to take the stage together to discuss their new book.

Ray Kurzweil visits Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book “The Web Within Us: When Minds and Machines Become One.” This event took place on July 1, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.

At the onset of the 21st century, it will be an era in which the very nature of what is means to be human will be both enriched and challenged, as our species breaks the shackles of its genetic legacy, and achieves inconceivable heights of intelligence, material progress, and longevity. The paradigm shift rate is now doubling every decade, so the twenty-first century will see 20,000 years of progress at todays rate. Computation, communication, biological technologies (for example, DNA sequencing), brain scanning, knowledge of the human brain, and human knowledge in general are all accelerating at an even faster pace, generally doubling price-performance, capacity, and bandwidth every year. Three-dimensional molecular computing will provide the hardware for human-level “strong” AI well before 2030. The more important software insights will be gained in part from the reverse-engineering of the human brain, a process well under way. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable, celebrated futurist Ray Kurzweil presents an inspiring vision of our ultimate destiny in which we will merge with our machines, can live forever, and are a billion times more intelligent…all within the next three to four decades.

The Enchantress of Florence is the story of a woman attempting to command her own destiny in a man’s world. It is the story of two cities, unknown to each other, at the height of their powers–the hedonistic Mughal capital, in which the brilliant Akbar the Great wrestles daily with questions of belief, desire, and the treachery of his sons, and the equally sensual city of Florence during the High Renaissance, where Niccolò Machiavelli takes a starring role as he learns, the hard way, about the true brutality of power.

Salman Rushdie is the author of nine previous novels, including Midnight’s Children (which was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981 and, in 1993, was judged to be the “Booker of Bookers,” the best novel to have won that prize in its first twenty-five years) and The Satanic Verses (winner of the Whitbread Prize for Best Novel). He is also the author of a book of stories, East, West, and three works of nonfiction—Imaginary Homelands, The Jaguar Smile, and The Wizard of Oz. He is co-editor of Mirrorwork, an anthology of contemporary Indian writing.

This event took place on June 18, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.
